Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Tiger Woods opened the PGA Championship with a 3-over 74 on Thursday and his round included one birdie and four bogeys.
Woods injured his back last Sunday at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and his status for the seasons final major was up in the air until Wednesday afternoon.
The four-time PGA Champion arrived at Valhalla on Wednesday and played nine holes of a practice round. Then on Thursday, Woods played his opening round alongside Phil Mickelson (69) and Padraig Harrington (73).
Woods played the back nine first in his opening round and stumbled to bogeys on the two par-3s, Nos. 11 and 14. He missed the 11th to the right and hit a nice chip, but failed to make the par putt.
At the 14th, Woods pulled his tee shot left. He again hit a good chip shot, but failed to convert the par effort. Woods got one back at the 16th, where he chipped in for his lone birdie of the day.
Around the turn, Woods hit his drive at the first into a hazard, but played out of it. He came up short with his second and failed to get up and down for par. That bogey dropped Woods to plus-2.
Woods hit a snap hook off the second tee and his ball found water. After his drop, he came up short of the green with his third, but managed to save bogey from there.
The 14-time major champion closed with seven pars in a row to wrap up his round.
