Northumberland, England (Sports Network) - The United States team was handed a sound defeat in Sunday's singles at the PGA Cup, but will retain the cup as the matches ended in a 13-13 tie.

Great Britain & Ireland won the singles matches 7 1/2 - 2 1/2 leading to the tie on the Hunting Course at DeVere Slaley Hall.

In the first match, former European Tour player Benn Barham cruised to a 4 & 3 win over Mike Small, who is a three-time winner of the PGA Professional National Championship.

The next two matches were split between the teams, then the fourth match between American JC Anderson and GB&I's Scott Henderson was halved. The U.S. led 12-8 at that point.

Gareth Wright and Graham Fox claimed the next two matches for Great Britain & Ireland.

Ryan Polzin picked up a 3 & 2 win for the Americans to make it 13-10.

Nick Brennan and Jon Barnes closed the gap to 13-12 before Dan Greenwood holed a 5-footer for par on the final hole to secure a 1-up win, which resulted in the matches being tied.

The Americans have not lost the Cup since 2005, and own a 17-5-4 record in the event.
