Barrington, RI (Sports Network) - Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt combined for a 12-under-par 59 on Monday to grab a 1-stroke lead at the CVS Charity Classic.

Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler are a shot back at Rhode Island Country Club after combining for an opening-round 11-under 60. Tournament co-host Billy Andrade and his playing partner Bill Haas are also a shot off the pace at minus-11.

Defending champions Morgan Pressel and Jay Haas are alone in fourth place after combining for a 9-under 62.

The duo of Stricker and Van Pelt opened with back-to-back birdies before parring the third. They added birdies at Nos. 4, 6 and 8 to make the turn at 5-under.

A run of four straight gains from the 11th pushed Stricker and Van Pelt to 9- under. Watson and Fowler were also 9-under through 14 holes, but Stricker and Van Pelt closed strong, tallying three straight birdies after a par at the 15th to snag the first-round lead.
