Recap: New Jersey vs. Montreal

Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob Josefson scored the winner in the shootout to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.

Josefson had New Jersey's second chance and he snapped his shot into the left corner. After Keith Kinkaid stopped David Desharnais, Patrik Elias put the game away when he slipped in a forehand.

Reid Boucher and Stefan Matteau scored goals, while Kinkaid made 31 saves for the Devils, who snapped a six-game slide.

"They're on top of the conference for a reason and we talked about what we needed to do to beat them," said Elias. "We gave up too many power plays, but in the end we were able to pull this one out."

Tomas Plekanec and Jeff Petry lit the lamp for the Canadiens, who have dropped five of six. Dustin Tokarski saved 16 shots in the loss.

"We've played a lot of good hockey this year," said Petry. "I think these next couple of games we have to pay attention to details and make sure we're sharp heading into the playoffs."

With the point, Montreal has 104 on the season and sits two ahead of Tampa Bay for first place in the Atlantic Division. Also, Montreal is one back of the Rangers for first overall in the Eastern Conference.

New Jersey drew first blood near the midway point of the first period as a shot was thrown on net from the right point and Matteau jammed in the rebound for his first of the season.

Montreal answered on the power play with 5:21 to play in the opening frame after Plekanec's shot from the top of the right circle found its way through a screen.

It was 2-1 in Montreal's favor just two minutes later as Petry's shot from the right point got past Kinkaid for his seventh of the season.

The only goal of the second period went to New Jersey, as Jon Merrill sent the puck on net from the left point and Boucher knocked it down and in for his first of the season at 4:37.
