Recap: Detroit vs. Boston

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Howard made 16 saves and the Detroit Red Wings grabbed a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins in their season-opener on Thursday.

Justin Abdelkader and Gustav Nyquist each had a goal while Johan Franzen notched two assists for the Red Wings, who were eliminated by Boston in five games in the quarterfinals last spring.

"Our team worked real hard and Howard made some good saves late," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "We started off kind of slow, but the guys really picked it up the last two periods."

Patrice Bergeron scored the only goal and Tuukka Rask made 22 saves for the Bruins, who had opened their season on Wednesday with a win over Philadelphia.

"We didn't have many shots in this game and you know a 1-0 lead is never going to hold up in this league," said Rask.

The Bruins notched the only goal of the first period as Bergeron picked off a poor Jonathan Ericsson pass in the neutral zone and from the top of the left circle let it fly with a wrister past Howard at 12:01.

Detroit tied the game just 3:52 into the second as Danny DeKeyser blasted a shot from the right point that wound up getting tipped in by Abdelkader.

Skating on the power play, the Red Wings made it a 2-1 game as a nice passing play was finished off when Nyquist found himself alone in front for the easy goal and a 2-1 game with 5:14 left in the second.

Howard made eight saves in the third period, and got a little help from the right post as Brad Marchand rang a wrister off it during a 6-on-4 late in the game.

Howard preserved the win with a tough glove save on a Reilly Smith wrister inside the final minute.
