Recap: Minnesota vs. Los Angeles

St. Paul, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Carter tied the game late in the third period and beat Niklas Backstrom again in the shootout to lift the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday in the season opener for both teams.

Drew Doughty also scored in regulation for the Kings and Jonathan Quick had 27 saves. Quick stopped both Minnesota skaters in the shootout, including a poke check on Mikko Koivu's try.

"He played good," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said of Quick. "It was good to see him in the shootout because I think the last time we were here we lost in a shootout."

Anze Kopitar and then Carter beat Backstrom to the stick side in the shootout as the Kings became the first team to beat the Wild in their first true home game of the season.

The Wild had been 11-0-0 with one tie in home openers in Minnesota.

Matt Cooke scored 64 seconds into his Wild debut and Jonas Brodin also had a goal. Backstrom gave up two goals on 18 shots, including Carter's backhand try on a rebound with 6:46 left in regulation.

Following Carter's goal, the Kings killed off a Minnesota power play after Willie Mitchell went off for interference with 3:38 left in regulation.

Cooke, with a seemingly open net, looked like he had it won but Kings center Trevor Lewis dropped to his knees without a stick and made a save during a flurry that had Quick out of position.

The Kings had the only shot on net in overtime.

Earlier, Cooke deflected the puck in with his foot after it was sent on net by Kyle Brodziak from the low left side, giving the Wild a 1-0 lead.

"I think we played pretty good," Cooke said. "I think we're happy, obviously not content, but maybe a few areas we can clean up."

Doughty's one-timer on the power play from the high left side tied the game for LA at the 7:40 mark, but Brodin put the Wild back on top with 2:48 left in the first on a goal from the slot, also on the power play.
