Washington, DC (Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals have placed defenseman Jeff Schultz on waivers, in anticipation of using a compliance buyout to free them of his contract.

The Associated Press reported the move on Tuesday, adding that a buyout can happen if he clears waivers by noon on Wednesday.

Schultz is heading into the final season of a four-year deal, but did little to endear him to management in 2013 after totaling three assists in 26 regular-season games which caused him to be a scratch during the playoffs. Schultz requested a trade after the Capitals were eliminated from the playoffs.

The 27-year-old has totaled 11 goals and 64 assists in 399 appearances with the Capitals, who selected the Alberta native 27th overall in the 2004 draft.
