New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Rangers signed defenseman Dan Girardi to a contract extension on Friday.

TSN Canada reported the deal to be for six years and worth $33 million.

Girardi had been the subject of trade rumors as he was in the final year of his old contract and could have become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Instead, he was able to procure an agreement with the only NHL franchise for which he has played.

"Dan has been a Ranger for his entire career, signing with us as an undrafted free agent and working his way to become a top defenseman in the NHL," Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather said. "His dedication to this club, as a leader both on the ice and in the locker room, is invaluable to this team. We are happy to have been able to ensure that he will continue to wear the Blueshirt."

The 29-year-old Girardi has four goals and 13 assists in 60 games this season. He leads the club in blocked shots (121) and hits (145).

For his career, the Ontario native has totaled 35 goals and 136 assists in 548 games.
