Charlotte, NC ( - Seeking a veteran to bolster their linebacking corps, the New York Giants acquired former Pro Bowl selection Jon Beason from the Carolina Panthers Friday.

The Panthers will receive an undisclosed late-round draft choice for Beason, the team's first-round pick in the 2007 draft who went to three consecutive Pro Bowls while manning the middle for Carolina from 2008-10.

The seventh-year pro's career has been derailed by injuries in recent years, however. Beason tore his left Achilles tendon in the 2011 opener and was subsequently placed on injured reserve, then was limited to just four games last season by a knee injury that required surgery.

Beason started the Panthers' first two contests of this season at outside linebacker, but had since been displaced by ex-Giant Chase Blackburn. The 28- year-old has recorded 11 tackles in three games in 2013.

The 0-4 Giants had been looking for an upgrade in the middle over former undrafted free agent Mark Herzlich, who was thrust into a starter's role when veteran Dan Connor sustained a season-ending neck injury in a Week 1 loss at Dallas.
