Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - The Indianapolis Colts placed Donald Thomas on the injured reserve on Tuesday, with the sixth-year guard expected to have season-ending surgery in the coming days.

Thomas, in his first season with the Colts, made starts in each of the team's first two games. However, in Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins, the 306- pounder tore a quad tendon in his right leg that will require surgery.

To replace Thomas, who spent his last two seasons with the New England Patriots and has made 23 starts in 45 games for his career, the Colts plan on giving rookie Hugh Thornton his first NFL start this Sunday against the 49ers.

Indianapolis chose Thornton in the third round of last April's NFL Draft. He filled in this past Sunday after Thomas went down.

The Colts made one other transaction on Tuesday, waiving fullback Dan Moore. Moore was already on Indianapolis's injured reserve.
