Recap: Portland vs. Sacramento
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Damian Lillard led six Trail Blazers in double figures and filled the stat sheet with 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as Portland bested the Sacramento Kings, 104-91, on Friday at Moda Center.
LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Matthews deposited 20 and 18 points, respectively, and Nicolas Batum tallied 14 points, seven boards and eight assists. Portland has won three of its last four on the heels of an opening night loss in Phoenix.
"Damian and L.A., they're kind of our go-to guys and they came through tonight," said Portland coach Terry Stotts.
DeMarcus Cousins shot 13-of-25 from the field en route to a season-high 35 points. He also grabbed nine boards and had four steals in the losing effort.
Isaiah Thomas continued his terrific play off the bench with 13 points and seven assists. The 60th overall pick in the 2011 draft has reached double figures in all five games so far this season. Greivis Vasquez had 12 points and six helpers.
"We've got guys that aren't making shots," said Kings coach Mike Malone. "We didn't defend anybody. 49 percent from the field, they killed us from the 3- point line. It's a broken record."
Lillard shot 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the opening quarter to propel the home team to a nine-point lead. Cousins had 10 on the other side, but Portland scored nine of the final 11 points to break a 20-20 tie.
"We played good defense, we got out in transition and we put them in scramble mode," said Lillard. "We just moved the ball and guys knocked down shots."
The lead grew to 11 at multiple points during the second quarter. Marcus Thornton and Patrick Patterson hit consecutive 3-pointers and Cousins dunked in transition to pull the Kings within three 5:32 before halftime. Matthews' 3 put Portland back up 10 with two minutes left, but the Kings cut it to 54-49 at the half.
An Aldridge putback midway through the third capped a 12-0 Portland surge to pull ahead by 13. The lead stayed in double figures until Cousins' layup with 4:53 left in the contest.
Aldridge then hit three jumpers to ice the game.Game Notes
