New York, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Knicks have exercised the option on the contract of head coach Mike Woodson for the 2014-15 season.

Woodson is entering his second full season as Knicks head coach after being named the interim coach on March 14, 2012. He guided New York to a record of 54-28 last season with the club's first division title since 1993-94.

It's the first major decision for new Knicks president and general manager Steve Mills, who was named to the post last week.

"I have long respected Mike and think he has done a remarkable job since becoming the head coach of the Knicks," said Mills in a statement Monday. "After spending time with him recently, it is clear that picking up his option is an easy decision."

Woodson took over for Mike D'Antoni in March 2012 and led New York to an 18-6 mark as interim coach. He has a record of 72-34 as Knicks coach and his .679 winning percentage is the second-best in franchise history.

The Knicks reached the second round of the playoffs last spring, winning a postseason series for the first time since 2000.

Woodson first joined the Knicks as an assistant coach in 2011 after spending six seasons as the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. He guided the Hawks to a record of 206-286, improving the club's win total each year with postseason berths in each of his final three years.
