El Segundo, CA (Sports Network) - An MRI exam has confirmed that Kobe Bryant suffered a torn Achilles.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar is set to undergo surgery on Saturday.
According to the Lakers' Twitter feed, athletic trainer Gary Vitti called it a third rupture.
"It has to be sewn back together," Vitti said.
Bryant was hurt in the fourth quarter of Friday's game against Golden State. He tried to drive to the basket and collapsed on the floor in pain.
"I made a move I've made a million times, and (the Achilles) just popped," Bryant said Friday after the game.
The injury comes during Los Angeles' critical playoff push in which the team currently remains one game ahead of Utah for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference.
Bryant's season ends with averages of 27.3 points, 6.0 assists and 5.6 rebounds in 78 games.
A recovery timetable for this type of injury is normally 6-to-9 months.
