Yankees sign Brian Roberts

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees made it official Tuesday and signed second baseman Brian Roberts to a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but reports last month indicated it to be worth $2 million plus incentives.

Roberts had spent his entire 13-year career in Baltimore, but has struggled with injuries since his last full season of 2009. He played 159 games that year and batted .283 with 16 homers and 79 runs batted in while leading the majors with 56 doubles.

However, the two-time All-Star has appeared in just 192 games over the last four seasons. He played 77 games last year and hit .249 with eight homers and 39 RBI. A hamstring injury kept him out from April 5 through late June.

The Yankees hope the 36-year-old veteran can step in at second base and take over for Robinson Cano, who left as a free agent and signed a 10-year contract with Seattle after nine years as a Yankee.

New York also signed free agent Kelly Johnson as a potential second base replacement and utility player.
