Peoria, AZ (Sports Network) - San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley is expected to miss at least the start of the 2013 regular season because of a thumb injury.

Headley suffered a fracture to the tip of his left thumb during this past Sunday's spring training game trying to break up a double play. While sliding into second base, Headley jammed his thumb into the bag.

The Padres said Headley could miss the first two weeks of the regular season.

In 161 games last season, Headley hit .286 with career bests of 31 homers and 115 runs batted in. He won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger last year while leading the National League in runs batted in.
