Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Nationals and pitcher Ross Detwiler avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract on Thursday.

Detwiler, 27, missed most of the 2013 season because of back issues. He was 2-7 with a 4.04 earned run average in 13 starts for Washington.

Selected sixth overall by the Nationals in the 2007 draft, the left-hander has compiled an 18-29 record with a 3.79 ERA in 85 career games -- 69 starts.
