Rangers P Nathan opts for free agency

Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Texas Rangers pitcher Joe Nathan has decided to void the final year on his contract and will enter free agency.

The Rangers exercised the club portion of Nathan's 2014 contract option, but the 38-year old reliever voided the player portion.

Nathan went 6-2 this past season with a 1.39 ERA and 43 saves. He signed with Texas as a free agent in 2011 after seven seasons in Minnesota and appeared in 133 games for the Rangers, all out of the bullpen.

Nathan ranks 10th all-time with 341 saves, the most among active pitchers following Mariano Rivera's retirement.
