Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Phillies announced that first baseman Ryan Howard underwent successful surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Michael Ciccotti at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning. Recovery time is estimated at 6-to-8 weeks.

"It went very well and very straight forward. As good news goes, this is as good as we can get," said Phils general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr.

Darin Ruf will continue to get an extended look at first base in Howard's absence. In four games since his call-up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he has collected four hits in 10 at-bats with one RBI and six strikeouts.
