Tigers, Scherzer avoid arbitration

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers have avoided arbitration with five players, including pitcher Max Scherzer.

The Tigers also agreed to 2014 contracts with pitchers Al Alburquerque and Rick Porcello and outfielders Andy Dirks and Austin Jackson on Friday.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Scherzer will make $15.525 million, Porcello $8.5 million, Jackson $6 million, Dirks $1.625 million and Alburquerque $837,500 this upcoming season.

Scherzer went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts with the Tigers last year. He won the American League Cy Young Award.

Alburquerque appeared in 53 games with Detroit in 2013, going 4-3 with a 4.59 ERA.

Porcello went 13-8 with a 4.32 ERA in 32 games (29 starts) with the Tigers last season. He established a career high with 142 strikeouts.

Dirks hit .256 with 16 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 37 RBI in 131 games with the Tigers in 2013.

Jackson batted .272 with 30 doubles, seven triples, 12 home runs, 49 RBI and eight stolen bases in 129 games with Detroit last season.
