Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox recalled catcher Ryan Lavarnway Thursday from Triple-A Pawtucket after optioning pitcher Alfredo Aceves to the PawSox following Wednesday's win over the Oakland Athletics.

The 31-year-old Aceves has gone 1-1 with an 8.66 ERA over five appearances -- three starts -- this season. Aceves surrendered eight runs -- seven earned -- on seven hits and four walks over 3 1/3 frames Tuesday during his last start in a 13-0 loss to Oakland.

Lavarnway, 25, is a career .172 hitter with four home runs and 20 RBI over 63 career games with the Red Sox over the 2011-12 seasons.
