Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed pitcher Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder, the team announced Saturday.

The move comes just two days after McCarthy had his worst outing of the season, a loss at Texas in which he was battered for six runs and nine hits in just 2 2/3 innings. The veteran righty had yielded only one run over a combined 24 innings in his three previous starts.

McCarthy, who's returning from surgery to repair an epidural hemorrhage and skull fracture as a result of being struck in the head by a batted ball while pitching for the Oakland Athletics last September, has compiled a 2-4 record with a 5.00 earned run average in 11 starts this season.

The Diamondbacks recalled pitcher Randall Delgado from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move, with the former Atlanta Brave a candidate to take McCarthy's spot in the rotation.

Delgado, acquired from the Braves as part of January's blockbuster trade that sent slugger Justin Upton to Atlanta, has gone 1-4 with a 6.84 ERA in 11 starts for the Aces.

The 23-year-old owns a 5-10 record with a 3.95 ERA over 25 career major league appearances, all but one of which have been starts.
