Recap: Memphis vs. Tulsa

Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Hayes rushed for 197 yards and three touchdowns to carry the Memphis Tigers to a 40-20 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in American Athletic Conference action at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Paxton Lynch threw for 183 yards and added 47 on the ground for Memphis (5-3, 3-1 AAC), which has won three of its last four.

Dane Evans racked up 349 yards and two touchdowns, while completing 28-of-54 pass attempts for Tulsa (1-7, 1-3), which has lost its last seven games. Keevan Lucas finished with 120 yards on 11 receptions, both game-highs.

DeMarco Nelson returned a fumble six yards for a touchdown near the end of the first quarter, as Tulsa opened up a 7-0 lead.

Memphis got a 53-yard field goal from Jake Elliott in the first minute of the second quarter, but Evans threw a 28-yard touchdown pas to Derek Patterson on the ensuing drive to boost the Golden Hurricane's advantage.

Less than two minutes later, Lynch scored on a three-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers were able to take a 20-14 lead into halftime thanks to a 37-yard field goal from Elliott and a 51-yard touchdown run from Hayes, which came just 14 seconds before the break.

Elliott was successful on a 47-yard field goal attempt halfway through the third quarter, pushing the Tigers' edge to 23-14. He added a 51-yard effort later in the period.

Hayes broke away for a 30-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter as the Tigers continued to pile on.

Tulsa did get a one-yard touchdown pass from Evans to Keyarris Garrett on its next drive, but Hayes scored his third touchdown of the game, this time on a 14-yard run, with just under three minutes remaining in regulation.

Memphis had a 243-62 advantage in rushing yards, but Tulsa was the better team through the air (349-183).
