Recap: Tulsa vs. East Carolina
Tulsa, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Shane Carden threw for 338 yards and accounted for five touchdowns, as the East Carolina Pirates defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 49-32, in American Athletic Conference action at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
Carden completed 28-of-41 throw with four passing touchdowns, one rushing score and an interception for ECU (8-3, 5-2 AAC), which will close out the regular season versus UCF on Dec. 4. Chris Hairston turned just six carries into 91 yards, while Cam Worthy (five reception 98 yards) and Justin Hardy (nine receptions, 88 yards, TD) both had stellar receiving outputs.
For Tulsa (2-10, 2-6), losers of three straight to end its season, Dane Evans completed just 15-of-32 passes for 199 yards, a touchdown and two picks. James Flanders rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown on 23 attempts.
ECU scored a touchdown on the opening drive of the game, as Carden capped off an 11-play, 75-yard possession with a 15-yard scoring strike to Bryce Williams.
Tulsa responded with two touchdowns just over a minute apart. First D'Angelo Brewer rushed in a 5-yard score, then after forcing an ECU three-and-out, Matt Hickman recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to give the home team a 14-7 lead.
The Pirates tied the score at the end of a busy first quarter with a 16-yard touchdown hook up from Carden to Jimmy Williams.
The second quarter was quiet until the final minute when ECU went ahead, 21-14, on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Carden to Hardy.
Tulsa chipped into its deficit early in the third quarter with a 35-yard field goal by Carl Salazar.
Carden and Bryce Williams connected again on another touchdown pass at the 10:21 mark of the third quarter, this time from 12 yards out, to give ECU an 11-point lead.
The Golden Hurricane cut their deficit to three five minutes later following a 30-yard touchdown pass from Evans to Keyarris Garrett and a successful two- point conversion, but the Pirates responded less than a minute later by moving 75 yards in just three plays, with Cory Hunter capping off the drive with a 1- yard touchdown run. A 54-yard run by Hairston set ECU up on the goal line.
Carden added a 2-yard rushing score early in the fourth quarter as ECU's lead swelled to 17. The Pirates tacked on a pick-six just over a minute later when Brandon Williams intercepted an Evans pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown.
Tulsa added a 1-yard touchdown run by Flanders later in the fourth to close out the scoring.
ECU outgained Tulsa, 510-388, and scored touchdowns on six of its seven red- zone possessions.Game Notes
