Recap: Appalachian St vs. South Alabama

Boone, NC ( - Brandon Bridge passed for 339 yards and three touchdowns, and ran in a first-quarter score to help his South Alabama Jaguars easily take down the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 47-21, in a Sun Belt Conference clash at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Saturday.

Bridge completed 19-of-28 passing and connected on a long ball of 67 yards for South Alabama (3-2, 2-1 Sun Belt). Xavier Johnson rushed for 70 yards on 10 carries, and Shavarez Smith caught six passes for 133 yards and two scores in the win, which was the second in a row for the Jaguars.

Taylor Lamb completed 16-of-30 passing for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and Kameron Bryant had a passing score of his own for Appalachian State (1-4, 0-2). Lamb led the team in rushing with 78 yards, and Malachi Jones was the top pass catcher with 64 yards and a score on four receptions. The Mountaineers have dropped three games in a row.

Bridge got the scoring onslaught started for the Jaguars by keeping the ball and rushing in from eight yards out with 9:27 to play in the first quarter. Grant McLaurin converted a 36-yard field goal with 5:12 to play in the frame to give South Alabama the 10-0 lead after one quarter.

McLaurin booted a 39-yard field goal through with 9:22 to play in the second quarter to inflate the USA lead, and Bridge connected on a 67-yard scoring pass to Smith just under three minutes later to push the lead to 20-0.

Appalachian State finally got on the board when Lamb found Jones on a 20-yard pass play with 3:06 left in the first half. The teams went into the midway break with South Alabama ahead, 20-7.

Bridge hit Danny Woodson on a 43-yard scoring pass to start the third quarter, and found Smith again not even four minutes later on touchdown passes to increase the Jaguars' lead to 33-7.

Terrance Timmons took a handoff from 30 yards out and dashed to the end zone with 1:24 to play in the third frame to increase USA's lead to 40-7 in the blowout on the road.

Lamb helped Appalachian State's case with a two-yard touchdown pass to Drew Bailey to slice the South Alabama lead to 40-14 with 13:53 remaining in the contest.

But Berron Tyson increased the lead for the Jaguars once again, punching in a five-yard touchdown run with 10:13 remaining.

The Mountaineers capped the scoring in the game when Bryant connected with Isaiah Lewis on a seven-yard scoring completion with 5:28 left to play. The hole for Appalachian State was far too great to overcome.

South Alabama had the advantage in total offensive yards in the game, 582-394, which included a 339-191 edge in passing yards. Appalachian State turned the ball over three times in the loss, while the Jaguars didn't the ball away once.
