Recap: South Alabama vs. Ga Southern
Mobile, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Breida ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns as the Georgia Southern Eagles defeated the South Alabama Jaguars, 28-6, in a Sun Belt Conference battle at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Breida carried 21 times for the Eagles (2-2, 1-0 Sun Belt). Quarterback Kevin Ellison added 96 yards and a touchdown on the ground while connecting on 6- of-11 passes for 85 yards and one interception in the win.
As for the Jaguars (1-2, 0-1) Brandon Bridge completed a mere 13-of-34 pass attempts for 149 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Shavarez Smith compiled 69 receiving yards on four catches in the loss.
The Eagles struck first when Breida took a hand off 64 yards for a touchdown at the end of the first quarter.
Alfred Ramsby capped off a seven-play, 85-yard yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to extend the Georgia Southern lead to 14-0 with 10:04 left to play in the half.
The Jaguars got on the board when Bridge connected with Smith for a 28-yard touchdown strike. Aleem Sunanon missed the extra point with just under four minutes to play in the half.
Breida capped off an 11-play, 76-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Eagles a 21-6 lead with 7:37 remaining in the third.
Georgia Southern continued to pull away when Ellison ran in from six yards out to increase the lead to 22 points late in the final frame.
In the win, the first for Georgia Southern as a member of the Sun Belt, the Eagles out gained USA, 420-296.Game Notes
