Recap: Arkansas State vs. Appalachian St

Jonesboro, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - Taylor Lamb threw for 255 yards and accounted for three touchdowns as the Appalachian State Mountaineers held on for a 37-32 victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves in Sun Belt Conference action from Centennial Bank Stadium.

Lamb completed 14-of-22 pass attempts and had two passing scores to go along with one on the ground for Appalachian State (5-5, 4-2 Sun Belt), which has won four straight. Marcus Cox rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns and Montez McGuire caught four passes for 55 yards and a score.

Fredi Knighten produced 147 yards and three touchdowns on 14-of-28 passing for Arkansas State (6-4, 4-2). Michael Gordon finished with 87 yards on 15 carries and Tres Houston caught four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Arkansas State jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. Knighten scored on a one-yard touchdown run and Blaise Taylor returned a punt 38 yards for a touchdown, although the ensuing extra point was missed.

The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter on a one- yard touchdown run from Cox. However, They also were unsuccessful on the extra point attempt.

Knighten responded with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Houston, but the Mountaineers snuck in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Lamb to Shaedon Meadors just before the break.

Most of the second half was all Appalachian State. Lamb scored on a one-yard touchdown run and Cox tallied a 14-yard scoring scamper in the third quarter. Then, Lamb threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to McGuire and Bentlee Critcher chipped in a 24-yard field goal in the final frame.

Arkansas State mounted a furious comeback attempt in the final minutes, with Knighten throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to Darion Griswold and a nine- yarder to Johnson White. However, it wasn't enough.

Appalachian State enjoyed a 549-314 advantage in total yards. Arkansas State did not convert on any of its 11 chances on third down.
