Recap: Massachusetts vs. Bowling Green

Amherst, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - James Knapke threw for 443 yards, three touchdowns and had three interceptions, and Travis Greene scored a pair of rushing touchdowns as the Bowling Green Falcons outlasted the Massachusetts Minutemen, 47-42, in an offensive Mid-American Conference battle at McGuirk Stadium Saturday.

Knapke completed 38-of-59 pass attempts, and found receiver Ryan Burbrink 11 times for a team-high 132 yards and a score for Bowling Green (3-2, 1-0 MAC). Greene carried the ball 20 times for 110 yards with two scores, while Fred Coppet took 15 carries for 78 yards in the win.

Blake Frohnapfel had a monster day in the loss for UMass (0-5, 0-1), completing 36-of-61 passing for 589 yards, five touchdowns and an interception. He was also sacked five times by the Bowling Green defense. Tajae Sharpe caught a team-high 13 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns.

Massachusetts got on the board with just a single play early in the first. Needing just nine seconds, Frohnapfel found Jalen Williams for a 60-yard scoring completion with 10:50 to play in the first to give the Minutemen the 7-0 lead.

Tyler Tate put up Bowling Green's first points with a 21-yard field goal with 4:02 left in the first quarter. Not even two minutes later, Knapke connected with Ronnie Moore for a 27-yard passing touchdown to give BGSU the lead.

Just 10 seconds into the second quarter, it was Tate who hit a 33-yard field goal for the Falcons to increase their lead to 13-7.

The Bowling Green lead didn't last for too long, though, as Frohnapfel connected with Rodney Mills on a 32-yard scoring completion to hand the Minutemen the 14-13 advantage with 11:55 to play in the second.

Greene found the end zone after taking a handoff four yards for Bowling Green, giving the Falcons the lead back, 20-14, with 9:47 to play in the first half.

Almost exactly three minutes later, the Minutemen regained the lead thanks to a Shadrach Abrokwah one-yard touchdown run with 6:48 left in the second. And again, the lead would be short-lived, as Knapke found Burbrink for a 35-yard scoring completion with five minutes to play. The Falcons took the 26-21 advantage while Tate's extra point try was blocked.

The Falcons got the scoring going in the second half as Knapke tossed his third touchdown pass, this one to Roger Lewis for 52 yards with 8:50 remaining in the period.

UMass didn't let the Falcons' lead last long, as Frohnapfel threw touchdown passes to Alex Kenney and Sharpe for 80 yards and 18 yards, respectively, to once again retake the lead, 35-33, with 7:25 to play in the third.

Greene gave his squad the lead back with 12:55 to play in the contest after he scampered into the end zone from 25 yards out.

Moore finally gave the Falcons some breathing room when he took a handoff 22 yards to the end zone, giving Bowling Green the 47-35 lead with 9:38 to play in the game.

Frohnapfel then passed for his fifth touchdown with 3:22 remaining in the game, again finding Sharpe, this time for a five-yard score. The Minutemen cut Bowling Green's lead to 47-42 with time winding down, but that would be the last time either side would score.

The two sides combined for a huge day offensively, gaining 59 total first downs and racking up 1,306 yards of total offense between them. The Minutemen turned the ball over four times in the loss, while Knapke's three interceptions were the only three turnovers for the Falcons. Bowling Green ran for 225 yards in the win, while UMass managed just 49 yards on the ground.
