Recap: Ohio U vs. Akron
Athens, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Josiah Yazdani's 22-yard field goal with 1:55 to play proved to be the difference, as the Ohio Bobcats pulled out a 23-20 victory in a Mid-American Conference brawl at Peden Stadium.
JD Sprague threw for 197 yards, two scores and an interception just 17-of-37 passing for Ohio (4-4, 2-2 MAC). Jordan Reid caught four passes for 57 yards and A.J. Ouellette added 30 yards and a score through the air to his team- high 74 yards rushing.
Tommy Woodson threw for 268 yards and had two touchdowns to match two interceptions for Akron (4-3, 2-1). Woodson completed 23-of-45 pass attempts and also led the Zip with 44 yards on the ground. Zach D'Orazio finished with 117 yards and a touchdown on nine receptions.
Sprague threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Ian Dixon less than two minutes into the contest.
Akron responded quickly with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Woodson to Conor Hundley.
A 42-yard field goal from Yazdani allowed Ohio to inch into the lead midway through the second quarter.
Robert Stein evened things up with a 40-yard field goal just over two minutes later.
Yazdani's second field goal of the game, this time from 38 yards out as time expired in the first half, lifted Ohio to a 13-10 lead at the break.
Akron pulled ahead midway through the third quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Woodson to D'Orazio.
Less than three minutes later, the Bobcats were back in front, following a three-yard touchdown pass from Sprague to Ouellette.
Stein tied the game with a 38-yard field goal in the beginning of the fourth quarter.
The rest of the period was quiet until Yazdani nailed what turned out to be the game-winning field goal.
Akron did get one last chance, but Woodson was intercepted by Josh Kristoff on the fourth play of the ensuing drive.Game Notes
