Recap: Idaho vs. Western Mich

Moscow, ID (SportsNetwork.com) - Zach Terrell passed for 218 yards and three touchdowns, and freshman running back Jarvion Franklin gained 210 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Western Michigan Broncos took down the Idaho Vandals, 45-33, in a non-conference clash at Kibbie Dome on Saturday.

Terrell completed just 8-of-13 passing, but for the 218 yards and three scores for Western Michigan (1-1). Franklin rushed a game-high 33 times for 210 yards and three scores, while Corey Davis caught five passes for 119 yards and a touchdown to lead the team in the win.

Matt Linehan connected on 27-of-41 passing for 362 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, and added a rushing score for Idaho (0-2). He found top receiver Joshua McCain seven times for a game-high 128 yards, including one touchdown in the loss.

Western Michigan was the first to strike, as Terrell found Davis on a 61-yard touchdown pass completion exactly two minutes into the contest. It was the only play of the drive for the Broncos.

But Idaho bounced back, scoring on a Linehan seven-yard touchdown run with 5:52 remaining in the first quarter to knot the score.

The Broncos once again gained the lead as Franklin capped a nine-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run for a 14-7 advantage with 1:53 to play in the frame.

Austin Rehkow drilled a 17-yard field goal for Idaho just two seconds into the second quarter, slicing the WMU lead to four. But the Broncos went back up just over a minute later when Terrell hit Daniel Braverman for a 31-yard touchdown strike to take a 21-10 lead.

Once again Idaho cut the lead, this time on a 62-yard Linehan pass to Richard Montgomery with 11:44 to play in the second frame. And again, Western Michigan had an answer as Braverman caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Terrell with 9:41 to play in the half.

Franklin broke through for his second rushing touchdown of the first half, this one a 39-yard burst, to put WMU up 35-17 with 3:09 left in the second. A safety against the Broncos put two points on the board for the Vandals, but Idaho still went into halftime trailing 35-19.

Andrew Haldeman connected on an 18-yard field goal to open the second-half scoring for the Broncos, who went up 38-19 with 8:03 to play in the third period.

Linehan tried to bring his Vandals back by finding Justin Podrabsky for an eight-yard touchdown strike with 3:22 left in the third to cut the score to 38-26, but WMU ended Idaho's hope once again. Franklin scored for the third time on the ground with a seven-yard run with 23 seconds left in the period.

Linehan tossed his third scoring pass of the day late in the fourth quarter - this one to McCain on a 75-yard play - to cut the lead to 45-33 in favor of the Broncos. But the scoring would end there.

The two teams combined for 891 yards of total offense in the game, with Western Michigan holding the slight edge, 484-407. The Vandals were able to amass over 400 yards of offense despite rushing for just 45 yards in the game. In an offensive battle, the two teams also combined to go 14-for-28 (50 percent) on third-down conversions.
