Recap: Rice vs. Hawaii

Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Driphus Jackson threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns as the Rice Owls held off the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, 28-14, in non-conference action at Rice Stadium.

Jackson completed 10-of-23 passing, was picked off once and sacked four times as the Owls (2-3) secured their second win in a row after opening 2014 with three consecutive defeats. Darik Dillard added a game-high 141 yards and another two scores for the hosts as well.

The Rainbow Warriors (1-4) were led by quarterback Ikaika Woolsey who hit on 12-of-27 for 117 yards and two TDs, but in addition to being picked off once, he was sacked seven times by an aggressive Rice defense. Scott Hardin caught four balls for 67 yards and both TDs for the visitors to the mainland.

Hawaii took a 7-0 lead at the 4:35 mark of the first quarter when Woolsey hit Harding with a 20-yard TD pass, capping a seven-play, 68-yard drive.

The only other points in the first half were furnished by James Mayden when he streaked 81 yards on a lengthy TD pass play from Jackson, allowing the Owls to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the break.

In the third the teams traded touchdowns, with the Woolsey and Harding again combining for the Warriors, this time on a 24-yard scoring play. Nine minutes later, Dillard scored the first of his two touchdowns, this one a two-yard effort, to again knot the score.

Dillard's four-yard TD run late in the fourth gave the hosts the lead for good, while a 31-yard TD catch by Jordan Taylor gave Rice some breathing room in the final moments.

Despite running only 67 plays, compared to 72 for Hawaii, the Owls produced more offense (391 to 261) than the Warriors.
