Recap: TX-San Antonio vs. Texas-El Paso
San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Jameill Showers passed for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and carried the ball for another 37 yards as his Texas- El Paso Miners shut out the home Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners, 34-0, in a Conference USA clash at the Alamodome.
Showers completed 12-of-18 pass attempts with a long of 75 yards for UTEP (4-3, 2-1 C-USA), which has won two games in a row. Aaron Jones carried the ball 21 times for 86 yards and a touchdown, and added two receptions for 36 yards and another score for the Miners in the win.
Austin Robinson completed just 6-of-20 passing for 32 yards and an interception for UTSA (2-6, 1-3). David Glasco II carried the ball five times for a team-best 16 yards in the loss, which was the second in a row for the team.
The Miners were eager to get on the board, and they dominated the first quarter. Showers completed a 75-yard scoring strike to Jaquan White with 11:54 left in the first frame to give the visitors a 7-0 advantage, then with 4:19 to play in the quarter Showers hit Jones for a 40-yard touchdown completion for the 14-0 lead.
Jay Mattox tacked on a 20-yard field goal for the Miners, who took a 17-0 lead into the half against UTSA.
Jones rattled off the first score in the second half with a 24-yard touchdown run to give his Miners a 24-0 advantage. The run came with 1:57 to play in the third period.
Mattox extended UTEP's lead even further, 27-0, with a 47-yard field goal he hit with three seconds left in the third quarter.
It got worse for the Roadrunners. Robinson had a pass intercepted just 14 seconds into the fourth quarter, which was returned by Jimmy Musgrave 19 yards for a UTEP touchdown. The Miners went ahead, 34-0, which was the final score.
UTEP's defense was stellar in the win, allowing just two total first downs and 70 combined offensive yards to UTSA. The Roadrunners were also a dismal 1- of-14 on third-down conversions.Game Notes
