Recap: Texas-El Paso vs. New Mexico St

El Paso, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Jones ran for 168 yards and two touchdowns as the Miners of Texas-El Paso held off the New Mexico State Aggies, 42-24, in non-conference action at the Sun Bowl in the annual I-10 rivalry matchup.

Jones carried the ball 25 times for the Miners (2-1) as they gained a total of 344 yards on the ground. Quarterback Jameill Showers, who scored on one of his six rushing attempts, converted 13-of-16 passing for 126 yards and a score as well.

The Aggies (2-1) were led by Tyler Rogers and his 324 passing yards, completing 22-of-40. Rogers, who tossed a pair of TDs and ran for another, was also picked off twice in the setback. Wide receiver Teldrick Morgan was responsible for eight catches, 202 yards and a touchdown on the night.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter as Joseph Matthews reeled in a 17-yard scoring strike from Rogers for the Aggies and UTEP countered with a one-yard TD by Jones.

New Mexico State again moved ahead in the second period thanks to a 28-yard field goal from Maxwell Johnson, but from there the Miners took control.

Darrin Laufasa tallied a pair of TDs as he posted a two-yard scoring reception from Showers at the 8:31 mark of the second quarter, followed by a one-yard run with just over a minute remaining before the break.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Showers capped a 10-play, 85-yard drive with a seven-yard TD run just seconds into the fourth frame, pushing the UTEP advantage to 28-10.

During a very active fourth stanza, Rogers tossed a 57-yard TD to Morgan and also scored on a one-yard run of his own, but in between the Miners more than kept pace as Jones and Garrett Simpson reached the end zone on runs of one yard apiece.

UTEP, which converted 7-of-10 on third down, controlled the action for more than 39 minutes.
