Recap: Rice vs. Texas-El Paso

Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Driphus Jackson threw for 227 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Rice Owls to a 31-13 victory over the Texas-El Paso Miners in a Conference USA showdown at Rice Stadium.

Jackson completed only 10-of-22 attempts and picked up 53 yards on the ground while under center for Rice (7-4, 5-2 C-USA), which took over sole possession of second place in the C-USA's West Division with the win. Jowan Davis recorded game-highs with 21 carries for 67 yards. Mario Hull accounted for a great deal of the Owls' aerial attack, as he reeled in six receptions for 150 yards and a score.

Jameill Showers led the Miners (6-5, 4-3) with 209 yards on 17-of-30 passing efficiency and also registered a rushing score. Ian Hamilton racked up 130 yards on four catches in the second loss in three outings for UTEP.

Both offenses were held scoreless through the opening quarter. The Owls went ahead 3-0, at the 9:20 mark of the second stanza as James Hairston converted a 32-yard field goal attempt.

UTEP answered with a nine-play, 62-yard drive on its next possession. After Showers had a pass attempt to Ian Hamilton on third down, the Miners evened the score with a successful 33-yard field goal try by Jay Mattox.

Rice responded with a 10-play, 75-yard drive which was concluded by a five- yard touchdown run by Darik Dillard. Hairston's successful conversion of the ensuing extra-point try gave the Owls a 10-3 lead at the intermission.

Rice extended its lead to 17-3 just over two minutes into the second half, as Jackson completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Taylor. The Miners rallied with consecutive scores to make it a one-possession game.

Mattox sent a 28-yard field goal attempt through the uprights at the 6:38 point of the third period for UTEP's first points of the third quarter. Showers scored on a five-yard run with three minutes remaining before the final frame to narrow the deficit to 24-13.

Rice ended the run with a six-play, 83-yard drive which Dillard capped off with his second touchdown run of the night.

The Owls added some insurance with just under six minutes left in regulation, as Jackson connected with Hull on a five-yard scoring pass.

Rice overcame 12 penalties which sent it back 95 yards. UTEP, which averaged just 2.1 yards per carry, was outgained, 392-262, in total yards of offense.
