Recap: Southern Miss vs. Rice
Hattiesburg, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Jowan Davis rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Rice Owls to a 41-23 victory over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in a Conference USA clash at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Driphus Jackson threw for 178 yards, two scores and was intercepted once on 14-of-22 passing for Rice (1-3, 1-1 C-USA). Mario Hull caught four balls for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Nick Mullens threw for 283 yards and two scores but was intercepted once while completing only 24-of-45 pass attempts for Southern Miss (2-3, 0-1).
James Farrimond hit a 27-yard field goal early in the first quarter to give Rice a 3-0 lead.
Southern Miss evened the score early in the second quarter when Corey Acosta kicked a 52-yard field goal.
Rice was able to get into the end zone midway through the second quarter when Davis scored on a six-yard touchdown run.
Southern Miss responded with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Mullens to Michael Thomas.
The back-and-forth scoring continued when Davis scored on another six-yard touchdown run just over a minute later.
Farrimond kicked a 33-yard field goal near the end of the second quarter, allowing Rice to take a 20-10 lead into halftime.
The Golden Eagles broke the scoring silence in the third quarter with a one- yard touchdown run from George Payne with 3:50 remaining in the frame. However, the extra point attempt failed, leaving Souther Miss in a 20-16 hole.
Rice woke up and pushed ahead by a score of 34-16 thanks to a 40-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to Hull and a one-yard touchdown run from Luke Turner.
A 10-yard touchdown pass from Mullens to James Cox kept things interesting, but the Owls cemented the victory with five-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to Connor Cella with four minutes left to play.
