Recap: North Texas vs. SMU
Denton, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The North Texas Mean Green piled up 268 yards on the ground as they rolled over the SMU Mustangs, 43-6, in a non- conference affair at Apogee Stadium.
Reggie Pegram (81 yards, TD), Jeffrey Wilson (57 yards), Erick Evans (53 yards, TD) and Antoinne Jimmerson (51 yards, TD) powered the running game for North Texas (1-1). Josh Greer threw for 86 yards on 9-of-12 passing.
Three different quarterbacks played for SMU (0-1), which has been outscored 88-6 during the first two games of the season. Neal Burcham made the start and completed 12-of-22 pass attempts for 99 yards, but he was intercepted twice as well. Kolney Cassel (11-of-21, 134 yards, TD) and Matt Davis (1-of-2, 33 yards) also got a chance to play. Der'rikk Thompson caught six passes for 74 yards, Stephen Nelson produced 60 yards on four grabs and Nate Halverson had 62 yards and a touchdown on three grabs.
The first half belonged to the Mean Green. In the opening frame Trevor Moore kicked a 44-yard field goal in the first quarter.
The real fireworks began in the second quarter, with Pegram scoring on a four- yard touchdown run, Moore connecting on a 21-yard field goal, Jarrian Roberts returning a fumble 31 yards for a touchdown and Moore adding a 23-yard field goal just before intermission.
Two more field goals from Moore in the third quarter further extended North Texas' lead. The first came from 42 yards out and the second was a 47-yarder.
The Mean Green kept piling on in the fourth quarter with Jimmerson scoring on an eight-yard touchdown run and Evans escaping for a 53-yard touchdown run.
A 33-yard touchdown pass from Cassel to Halverson on the last play of the game accounted for SMU's entire scoring output.
Despite the large scoring difference, the Mean Green and Mustangs each had 17 first downs.Game Notes
