Recap: Middle Tennessee vs. BYU
Murfreesboro, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Christian Stewart passed for 316 yards and two touchdowns as the quarterback helped his BYU Cougars to a 27-7 non- conference win over the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders at Floyd Stadium Saturday.
Stewart completed 28-of-45 pass attempts in the contest, and also ran in a late-game score for BYU (5-4), which snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory.
Austin Grammer completed 16-of-32 passing for 119 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Middle Tennessee (5-4), which has lost two of its last three games. Shane Tucker carried the ball 10 times for a team-best 49 yards in the defeat.
BYU got the scoring started with 12:36 left to play in the first quarter when Stewart found Colby Pearson for a 37-yard touchdown completion. That gave the Cougars the early 7-0 advantage.
With 4:04 to play in the half, Grammer connected on a 22-yard touchdown pass to Devin Clarke for the Blue Raiders, knotting the score at 7-7.
No one scored again until the third quarter, when Stewart connected with Jordan Leslie on a 19-yard touchdown pass completion for a 14-7 BYU advantage. The Cougars notched the score with 9:24 to play in the third period.
Paul Lasike scored on a two-yard run with 20 seconds left in the third quarter to give his Cougars a 21-7 cushion.
Stewart added a touchdown run from a yard out with 4:37 left to play in the game to give BYU a 27-7 advantage. Trevor Samson's extra point try missed following the score.
BYU racked up 444 yards of offense in the win, compared to just 228 yards for Middle Tennessee. The Cougars were a perfect 3-for-3 in red zone opportunities, while the Blue Raiders missed on their only chance inside BYU's 20-yard line.Game Notes
