Recap: Louisiana Tech vs. Texas-El Paso
Ruston, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cody Sokol threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth as the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs crushed the Miners of Texas-El Paso, 55-3, in a Conference USA clash at Joe Aillet Stadium.
Sokol converted just six of his 16 pass attempts for the Bulldogs (3-3, 2-0 CUSA), but still three ended up in the end zone and all of them stretched to 173 yards for the signal caller. Kenneth Dixon ran for a game-high 86 yards and a score on 21 carries as LaTech snapped a two-game slide.
The Miners (2-3, 0-1), losers of two straight, produced just 224 yards of total offense and were kept out of the end zone the entire night. Jameill Showers converted 15-of-28 passing for 143 yards, had three passes intercepted and was sacked three times in the loss.
The hosts scored four straight touchdowns to open the meeting, beginning with a four-yard TD run by Dixon early in the first quarter, followed by Sokol's 32-yard scoring run less than two minutes into the second frame. The quarterback then found Carlos Henderson for a 69-yard TD pass play, with a 54- yard TD run by Le'Vander Liggins four minutes later.
The only points of the night for the Miners came on a 36-yard field goal by Jay Mattox with 22 seconds left in the first half.
Ahead by 25 entering the third, the Bulldogs continued to pile on as Jonathan Barnes accounted for field goals of 45 and 39 yards in the frame, with a 20- yard TD pass from Sokol to Hunter Lee in between.
An 18-yard TD reception by Marcus Gaines near the end of the third made the score 48-3 and the assault was capped off by a Jarred Craft 18-yard rushing TD in the fourth stanza.
Defensively, Louisiana Tech held the visitors to just 5-of-17 on third down and registered 11 tackles for loss, while Xavier Woods accounted for two of his team's three interceptions.
The point total for the Bulldogs was their highest since winning an offensive shootout with Texas State, 62-55, on Nov. 10, 2012.Game Notes
