Recap: Fla Atlantic vs. Old Dominion

Boca Raton, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - A 27-yard field goal by Satchel Ziffer as time expired pushed the Old Dominion Monarchs to a thrilling 31-28 win over the Florida Atlantic Owls in Conference USA action at FAU Stadium.

Taylor Heinicke led the offensive attack for Old Dominion (6-6, 4-4 CUSA) as he converted 32-of-50 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns, while shaking off two sacks and an interception in the meeting. On the ground, Ray Lawry carried much of the load with 25 carries for a game-high 213 yards and a touchdown.

The Owls (3-9, 2-6) ran for a combined 207 yards and three TDs, one of those coming from Jaquez Johnson who also converted 9-of-19 passes for 133 yards in the setback.

The Monarchs took the very first possession of the game 75 yards on 10 plays and capped it off with a three-yard TD pass from Heinicke to Antonio Vaughan.

The Owls assumed control later in the period as Tony Moore found the end zone on a one-yard run and Lucky Whitehead returned a punt 73 yards for the score, giving the hosts a 14-7 advantage heading into the second.

ODU then turned to Melvin Vaughn to tie the score as he reeled in a 12-yard pass from Heinicke at the 10:13 mark of the second frame.

The teams then traded touchdowns to close out the first half as Jay Warren crossed the goal line on a three-yard run for the Owls, followed by a Zach Pascal two-yard TD reception for the Monarchs, locking up the meeting at 21-21.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Lawry streaked 68 yards to the end zone for the Monarchs to again put them on top, this time at 28-21.

With 5:14 left in regulation, Johnson took it upon himself to avoid the ODU defense and score on an 11-yard, knotting the score once more and setting up Ziffer to play the hero after the Monarchs drove 57 yards on 16 plays and ate up all of the clock.

ODU, which converted a mere 3-of-13 on third down, generated 488 yards of offense as it ran 27 more plays than the hosts.
