The Hoosiers' defense made its mark right away, as Tegray Scales intercepted Williams on the third play from scrimmage to give the hosts a short field for their first drive. Indiana capitalized on the turnover, as Coleman scored on a one-yard run after moving the chains twice to set up 1st-and-goal.
Indiana then recovered an on-side kick on the ensuing kickoff to regain possession near mid-field. The Hoosiers produced a nine-play, 51-yard drive which was concluded with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Sudfeld to Jordan Fuchs to take a 14-0 lead.
UNT managed to move the chains for the first time in the contest on its next drive, but the Hoosiers did not allow a yard over the next three plays to force a punt. Eric Keena's punt went just 31 yards before landing out of bounds at Indiana's 44-yard line. The Hoosiers continued to take advantage of their excellent starting field position, as Sudfeld tossed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Wynn on the fourth play of the drive to give the hosts a 21-0 lead with under 30 seconds left in the first period.
The only score of the second quarter came courtesy of a 20-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Carlos Harris. Trevor Moore's successful extra-point attempt with 1:34 left until the intermission sent the Mean Green into the break trailing, 21-7.
The Hoosiers put the game out of reach with 14 unanswered points to begin the second half. Roberts broke away for a 47-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the half and also scored on a three-yard run near the midway point of the third frame to give Indiana a 35-7 advantage on the scoreboard.
UNT stopped the run, as Moore converted a 20-yard field goal try on the Mean Green's next possession. However, Indiana answered back quickly as Sudfeld completed a 76-yard strike to Winn with 1:50 remaining before the start of the fourth period.
The Mean Green cut the margin to 18 points with consecutive touchdown passes by Williams in the final period. The UNT signal caller connected with Marcus Smith on a 20-yard pass to conclude a nine-play, 83-yard drive and found Tanner Smith in the end zone at the 9:21 mark to reduce Indiana's lead to 42-24.
