Recap: Utah vs. Fresno State

Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Travis Wilson threw five touchdown passes as the Utah Utes rolled over the Fresno State Bulldogs, 59-27, in a non-conference bout at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Wilson completed 11-of-20 pass attempts for 181 yards for the Utes (2-0), who also dominated Idaho State in the season opener last week, 56-14. Kenneth Scott finished with six receptions for 77 yards and Dres Anderson three catches for another 84 yards, with both catching two touchdowns.

Brian Burrell threw for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 8-of-16 passing for the Bulldogs (0-2), who were routed for the second time in as many weeks after being crushed by USC on the road, 52-13. Burrell split time under center with Brandon Connette, who completed 16-of-24 pass attempts for 177 yards and a score. Greg Watson caught two touchdown passes and had 62 receiving yards.

The Utes opened the scoring with a 47-yard field goal by Andy Phillips just over two minutes into the meeting. They added to the early lead just over four minutes later on a seven-yard touchdown pass floated into the corner of the end zone for Scott.

Anderson helped to keep building on an outstanding opening quarter with a 38- yard touchdown reception, making it 17-0 with six minutes left in the frame.

Midway through the second quarter, Wilson connected with Westlee Tonga on a 24-yard touchdown toss to give the Utes a commanding 24-0 advantage.

Just over a minute later, the Bulldogs made a push to get back in the game after a two-yard touchdown pass from Connette to Malique Micenheimer, making it 24-7.

Utah didn't take too long to respond, however, as Scott grabbed his second touchdown of the afternoon on a 36-yard pass with 4:29 left in the first half.

Just over five minutes into the second half Anderson caught a five-yard scoring strike for his second touchdown, extending the Utah lead to 38-7.

With the game well in hand, the Utes turned to backup quarterback Kendal Thompson who reached the end zone on a 14-yard run five minutes later.

Capping off a seven-play, 81-yard drive in just over two minutes, Connette crossed the goal line from a yard out, as the teams began to trade scoring opportunities the rest of the way.

The Utes picked up another couple of TDs in the fourth quarter as Andre Lewis turned a 45-yard pass play with Thompson into a score, while Troy McCormick scored on a two-yard run to finish off a masterful 14-play, 77-yard drive that consumed nearly 10 minutes of the clock.

Watson logged scoring catches of 42 and four yards in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs put together quick scoring drives, but it was too little, too late in the 32-point decision.

Fresno State's inability to convert on third downs, just 5-of-16, hurt the team mightily in trying to slow down Utah's frantic tempo.
