Recap: California vs. BYU

Berkeley, CA ( - Christian Stewart threw for 433 yards and five touchdowns as the BYU Cougars outlasted the California Bears for a 42-35 victory in a non-conference shootout at Memorial Stadium.

Stewart connected on 23-of-38 pass attempts and was picked off once while under center for BYU (8-4), which picked up its fourth consecutive win to close out the regular season. Jordan Leslie and Mitchell Juergens reeled in a pair of touchdown catches each. Leslie made five catches for 155 yards, while Juergens tallied 107 yards on seven grabs. Paul Lasike racked up 63 yards on 12 carries.

The Golden Bears (5-7) failed to become bowl eligible despite a stellar showing by Jared Goff, who finished 38-of-60 passing for 393 yards and four touchdowns. Kenny Lawler also had a terrific performance for Cal, as he compiled 138 yards and three scores on 12 receptions. Chris Harper made eight grabs for 98 yards and Daniel Lasco rushed 26 times for 130 yards.

BYU's offense got to work immedietely as it produced a 10-play, 73-yard drive which was concluded by a one-yard rushing score by Lasike after receiving the opening kickoff. The Bears responded with a 13-play, 84-yard drive which ended with a nine-yard strike from Goff to Lawler on their first possession to even the score, 7-7.

The Cougars took a 14-7 lead into the second stanza after Stewart threw a 47- yard touchdown pass to Juergens at the 1:04 mark of the first frame.

Cal took control in the second quarter as its offense managed to engineer a pair of touchdown drives while its defense held the visitors scoreless. Lawler reeled in a 16-yard touchdown reception and made a grab on a one-yard pass into the end zone to give the Bears a 21-14 lead at halftime.

BYU recorded the first points of the second half, as Stewart found Algernon Brown on a 22-yard scoring pass. Cal answered as Tre Watson capped off an 8- play, 67-yard drive with a nine yard rushing score with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter. Stewart once again tied the score, this time with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Juergens with just over a minute left in the third frame.

Leslie came up in the clutch in the fourth quarter as he made two go-ahead touchdown receptions. Leslie's first score came with 11:49 remaining when he made an 83-yard reception for six points to put BYU in front, 35-28.

Cal struck back as Trevor Davis came down with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Goff just over two minutes later.

The Bears' playoff hopes began to evaporate as Leslie registered a 38-yard touchdown catch with just under three minutes left in regulation. Cal's final drive ended at BYU's 14-yard line when a Goff pass attempt fell incomplete on 4th-and-goal.

The offenses combined for 1,106 total yards, 60 first downs and just three turnovers.
