Recap: Indiana vs. Penn State

Bloomington, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Bill Belton ran for 137 yards and a touchdown, and Penn State claimed a 13-7 road win over the Indiana Hoosiers in a Big Ten Conference showdown at Memorial Stadium.

The Nittany Lions (5-4, 2-4 Big Ten) managed to snap a four-game slide and stay in the hunt for a bowl bid despite another forgettable day by sophomore quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who completed only 12-of-29 passes for 168 yards and two interceptions. Hackenberg was also sacked five times.

His counterpart, Zander Diamont, completed just 13-of-27 attempts for 68 yards and two picks for the Hoosiers (3-6, 0-5), who have now dropped four in a row and remain winless in conference play. Tevin Coleman entered the day as the nation's leading rusher (162.5) but was held to 71 yards on 20 carries by Penn State's top-ranked run defense. It was the first time in 11 games that Coleman failed to eclipse 100 yards on the ground.

After a scoreless first quarter, Penn State had a chance to get on the board early in the second quarter, but the Hoosiers came up with a goal line stand and then blocked Sam Ficken's 23-yard field goal attempt.

On the first play of the Nittany Lions' next possession, Hoosiers safety Mark Murphy stepped in front of a Hackenberg pass and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown to put IU on top, 7-0.

But on Penn State's very next play from scrimmage, Belton took a draw up the middle and darted 92 yards to the end zone virtually untouched, tying the score at 7-7 with 3:37 to play in the opening half. The touchdown run was the longest ever by a Penn State player.

Penn State took a 10-7 lead at the 9:28 mark of the third quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Ficken.

Ficken tacked on a 28-yarder in the final minute of regulation, following a key interception and return by Nittany Lions linebacker Nyeem Wartman to the Indiana 24.

Penn State has now won 17 of 18 meetings in the all-time series between these two teams.
