Recap: Penn State vs. Akron

University Park, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Christian Hackenberg threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns as the Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the visiting Akron Zips, 21-3, in non-conference action at Beaver Stadium.

Hackenberg converted on 22-of-36 pass attempts, but also threw two interceptions for the Nittany Lions (2-0). Jesse James recorded 57 yards and two scores on only a pair of receptions. Eugene Lewis had a game-high 98 yards on six catches.

The Zips (1-1) struggled to produce on offense. Kyle Pohl threw for 208 yards on 24-of-46 passing. Akron only put up 277 yards of total offense in the loss.

The Nittany Lions took an early lead when Hackenberg connected with Bill Belton on a 22-yard scoring strike.

In the third quarter, Akron took advantage of a Penn State fumble as Robert Stein kicked a 28-yard field goal.

Hackenberg extended the Nittany Lions' lead to 14-3 when he capped of a 79- yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to James.

Hackenberg connected with James again, this time from 44 yards out, to finish off the Penn State victory.

Penn State's win came in the home debut of head coach James Franklin.
