Recap: Minnesota vs. Purdue
Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Mitch Leidner threw for 165 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 84 yards and a score, helping the Minnesota Golden Gophers edge out the Purdue Boilermakers, 39-38, in Big Ten play at TCF Bank Stadium.
Leidner completed 9-of-18 pass attempts for the Golden Gophers (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten), who won their fourth straight game. David Cobb carried the ball a game- high 35 times, running for 194 yards and a touchdown.
Austin Appleby threw for 153 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 79 yards and another score for the Boilermakers (3-5, 1-3), who have lost in three of their last four. Appleby was 16-of-26 on pass attempts, despite being intercepted twice. Raheem Mostert rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on five carries.
In the first minute of the contest Cobb capped off a successful opening drive for Minnesota, running it in from two yards for the score.
The Boilermakers responded quickly, as Appleby connected with Danny Anthrop on a 55-yard touchdown pass.
Midway through the opening quarter, Leidner completed a four-yard touchdown pass to Maxx Williams, making it 14-7 in favor of Minnesota.
Appleby found Gabe Holmes less than four minutes later for a 13-yard touchdown pass to tie the game back up.
Early in the second quarter, Donnell Kirkwood ran three yards for a Golden Gophers touchdown, but Ryan Santoso's extra point attempt missed, making it 20-14.
Mostert gave the Boilermakers their first lead soon after, running 42 yards for a touchdown.
Paul Griggs then converted a 26-yard field goal to make it 24-20 Purdue.
With just over a minute left in the half, Appleby connected with DeAngelo Yancey on an eight-yard touchdown pass, as Purdue kept rolling.
A few minutes into the second half, Minnesota took a bite out of the deficit, as Leidner ran six yards for a score. However, Santoso once again failed on later in the third quarter.
A minute later, Appleby kept the ball for a one-yard touchdown rush, extending the Purdue lead again to 38-29.
With just over a minute left in the third quarter, Leidner found KJ Maye for a 37-yard touchdown pass, making it 38-36.
Santoso made up for the earlier missed PATs with five minutes left in the game, as he converted on a 52-yard field goal, giving his team the narrow margin of victory.Game Notes
