Recap: Michigan vs. Penn State

Ann Arbor, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Wile connected on all three of his field goal attempts and Michigan's defense allowed zero second-half points, as the Wolverines held on to defeat the Penn State Nittany Lions, 18-13, in Big Ten Conference action at Michigan Stadium.

Devin Gardner completed 16-of-24 passes for 192 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Michigan (3-4, 1-2 Big Ten), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Devin Funchess tallied seven receptions for 69 yards and a score in the victory.

For Penn State (4-2, 1-2), Christian Hackenberg was 21-of-32 passing for 160 yards with a touchdown and a pick. DaeSean Hamilton (seven receptions, 58 yards, TD) was Hackenberg's go-to target.

Penn State got the scoring started on the game's first drive with Sam Ficken connecting on a 35-yard field goal.

Michigan answered on its first possession with a 43-yard touchdown pass from Gardner to Funchess, capping off a six-play, 75-yard drive.

Another Penn State drive stalled later in the first quarter. Ficken knocked through a 32-yard field goal to make it 7-6.

The Nittany Lions regained the lead at the 11:58 mark of the second quarter after Hackenberg connected with Hamilton on a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Wile drilled a 45-yard field goal for the Wolverines with 5:08 to play in the half. Penn State carried a 13-10 lead into intermission.

The only score of the third quarter came on a 42-yard field goal by Wile at the 2:30 mark, which allowed Michigan to tie the score at 13-13. Wile added another field goal, a 37-yarder, early in the fourth to give the home team the lead.

With Penn State facing a 4th-and-long deep in its own territory with under two minutes to play, it conceded a safety rather than risk a blocked punt or a long return.

Michigan converted a first down on its final drive to successfully run out the clock.

Michigan amassed only 256 yards, but Penn State was even worse with 214.
