Recap: Purdue vs. Iowa
West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Weisman ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns, as the Iowa Hawkeyes claimed a 24-10 win over Purdue in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams at Ross-Ade Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback C.J. Beathard, making his first career start after rallying Iowa from a 10-point deficit to beat Pittsburgh on the road last week, completed 17-of-37 passes for 245 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He replaced Jake Rudock, who was benched after starting the last 17 games under center for the Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten).
Akeem Hunt led the Boilermakers (2-3, 0-1) with 90 yards on 14 carries.
Purdue's defense held Iowa without a first down in five first-quarter possessions. Boilermakers defensive back Frankie Williams stepped in front of a Beathard pass and returned it 39 yards for a TD at the 4:13 mark of the opening frame to stake Purdue a 7-0 lead.
Boilermakers kicker Paul Griggs, who missed a 43-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter, made a 42-yarder with 11:48 remaining in the second to make it a 10-0 game.
Iowa got on the scoreboard on the ensuing possession as Weisman crossed the goal line on a two-yard run.
Hawkeyes kicker Marshall Koehn split the uprights from 28 yards out with 13 seconds remaining in the half to send the teams into the locker room with the score deadlocked at 10-10.
The Hawkeyes took their first lead with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter when Beathard found Kevonte Martin-Manley for a 23-yard scoring strike.
Weisman made it a 24-10 game on a five-yard touchdown run at the 5:10 mark of the fourth quarter, capping a 12-play, 79-yard drive.
Purdue managed only nine first downs and 156 total yards for the game.Game Notes
