Recap: Texas Tech vs. West Virginia

Lubbock, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Lambert booted a school-record 55-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the West Virginia Mountaineers to a thrilling 37-34 comeback win over Texas Tech in Big 12 Conference play at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Lambert's 55-yarder tied the school record set by Paul Woodside in 1984. Clint Trickett threw for a season-low 301 yards and two touchdowns, while Kevin White caught 13 passes for 123 yards and a TD to help the Mountaineers (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) rally back from a 14-point deficit over the final seven minutes and change.

Jordan Thompson finished with 109 yards and a TD on six catches. Wendell Smallwood (15 carries, 123 yards) and Rushel Shell (24 carries, 110 yards, 2 TDs) both eclipsed 100 yards on the ground in the victory.

Davis Webb threw for 348 yards and three TDs for the Red Raiders (2-4, 0-3), who suffered their fourth straight loss and eighth in a row in conference play dating back to last season. DeAndre Washington carried 29 times for a game-high 132 yards in the loss, and teammate Devin Lauderdale finished with 112 yards and two TDs receiving.

After West Virginia opened the game with a 42-yard field goal by Lambert, the Red Raiders took a 7-3 lead on Webb's 34-yard touchdown pass to Lauderdale at the 3:05 mark of the first quarter.

That duo hooked up for a 76-yard scoring strike less than two minutes later to push the Texas Tech lead to 14-3.

WVU cut the margin to 14-10 early in the second quarter on Shell's 12-yard touchdown scamper, which capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive.

Webb responded on the ensuing possession with a 43-yard scoring strike to Jakeem Grant to make it a 21-10 game.

The score would remain that way until the 8:03 mark of the third quarter, when Lambert converted a 38-yard field goal.

Ryan Bustin answered with field goals of 21 and 25 yards on the Red Raiders' next two drives.

The Mountaineers trimmed the margin to 27-20 late in the third quarter on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Trickett to Thompson.

Tech made it a 34-20 game midway through the fourth quarter on a 69-yard touchdown burst by Justin Stockton.

However, Trickett came right back with a 26-yard scoring strike to White less than two minutes later. The WVU defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing series, then Shell finished off a seven-play, 78-yard drive with a 1-yard TD plunge to tie the score at 34-34 with 2:02 remaining in regulation.

The Mountaineers got the ball back at their own 20 with 52 seconds remaining and two timeouts after forcing a punt. Trickett completed three straight passes down the middle of the field to Thompson to move the ball into position for Lambert's game-winning kick.

The Red Raiders entered the week as the most penalized team in the country, and they were flagged 12 more times in this one for 115 yards.
