Recap: Texas Tech vs. Kansas
Lubbock, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Davis Webb threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a 34-21 win over the Kansas Jayhawks in a Big 12 Conference bout at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Webb completed 28-of-44 pass attempts while under center for TTU (3-4, 1-3 Big 12), which snapped a four-game losing streak with the decision. Jakeem Grant and Bradley Marquez reeled in six receptions apiece for 73 and 70 yards, respectively. DeAndre Washington recorded 164 yards on 23 carries to pace the Red Raiders' rushing attack.
Kansas (2-5, 0-4) fell for the fourth time in a row despite a solid outing by Michael Cummings, who finished with a 20-of-32 passing efficiency for 235 yards with two touchdowns against one interception. Corey Avery rushed 15 times for 69 yards, while Jimmay Mundine made a game-high seven catches for 82 yards and a score.
The Red Raiders took control right away as they opened the contest with 17 unanswered points. Ryan Bustin gave TTU a 3-0 lead just over two minutes after kickoff with a successful 34-yard field goal attempt. Webb tossed his first touchdown pass of the contest at the 2:39 mark of the opening frame, when he connected with Davis on a 13-yard pass.
Marques made an eight-yard touchdown catch with just under seven minutes left before the intermission to conclude a nine-play, 90-yard scoring drive.
Kansas ended the run just before halftime, as Cummings found Justin McCay for a 16-yard touchdown pass that sent the Jayhawks into the break trailing, 17-7.
TTU extended its lead to 20-7 at the 11:11 mark of the third frame, as Bustin made good on a 38-yard field goal try.
After Cummings returned the ball to the Red Raiders with an interception, Michael Reynolds forced a fumble when sacking Webb and Victor Simmons jumped on the loose ball to give the Jayhawks great starting field position for their next drive. The turnover led to a 21-yard touchdown toss from Cummings to Mundine, which narrowed the Jayhawks' deficit to 20-14 with 8:34 showing on the third period game clock.
TTU responded with a nine-play, 63 yard drive which was capped off by a six- yard touchdown pass from Webb to Ian Sadler.
Cummings engineered another scoring drive for Kansas, moving the offense 80 yards on six plays before rushing a yard across the goal line to narrow the Red Raiders' lead down to 27-21 just before the start of the fourth quarter.
The only points of the final period came at the 13:21 mark, when Justin Stockton broke away for a 21-yard touchdown run to give TTU a comfortable 34-21 lead.
The Red Raiders tallied 507 total yards of offense, compared to only 363 by Kansas.Game Notes
