Recap: Kansas vs. Texas
Lawrence, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyrone Swoopes passed for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the Texas Longhorns shut out the Kansas Jayhawks, 23-0, on the road in a Big 12 Conference clash at Memorial Stadium.
Swoopes connected on 19-of-34 passing, and took one of his nine carries for a touchdown for Texas (2-2, 1-0 Big 12). John Harris and Jaxon Shipley each hauled in six receptions to lead the team, while Harris caught a team-best 89 yards with a touchdown.
Montell Cozart has a game he'd like to forget for Kansas (2-2, 0-1). The starter for the Jayhawks completed 12-of-31 passing for 140 yards with four interceptions in the shutout loss. De'Andre Mann carried the ball 17 times for 83 yards to lead Kansas, while Cozart registered a game-high 19 totes for 32 yards.
Texas struck first when Swoopes hit M.J. McFarland on a one-yard pass play for the score with 55 seconds to play in the first quarter. Nick Rose missed the ensuing extra point, leaving the Longhorns with a 6-0 advantage.
With 4:42 remaining in the second quarter, Swoopes carried the ball into the end zone from seven yards out to give Texas the 13-0 advantage headed into the midway break.
The Longhorns didn't score again until the fourth quarter, when Rose connected on a 42-yard field goal try with 10:41 left to play in the game to give Texas the 16-0 advantage.
Swoopes passed for his second score of the night with 3:04 to play to shut down any chance of a Kansas comeback. Swoopes hit Harris on a 16-yard completion to close out the scoring.
Texas shut down all three of Kansas' fourth-down tries in the game, and limited the Jayhawks to just 3.8 yards per play offensively. The Longhorns had the edge in turnovers, 4-1, and were able to sack Cozart four times.Game Notes
