Recap: Texas Tech vs. Baylor

Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Shock Linwood totaled 158 yards and scored twice on 24 carries as No. 5 Baylor escaped with a 48-46 victory over Texas Tech in a shootout in North Texas on Saturday.

Bryce Petty threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-25 efficiency before being taken out in the third quarter for the Bears (10-1, 7-1 Big 12), who have won four in a row and complete their regular season by hosting Kansas State next week.

"Well, I'm not sure if it was a game or war, quite honestly. It was, you know, filled with a lot of emotions," Baylor head coach Art Briles said. "We got a big win on a big stage. And we set ourselves up to have a chance next weekend to do something pretty special."

Seth Russell finished the contest 8-of-17 for 82 yards and a TD to Levi Norwood. Norwood ended up with 63 yards on five catches, Corey Coleman added 57 yards on six grabs, while Antwan Goodley also notched a score through the air.

Patrick Mahomes exploded for 598 yards and six touchdowns on 30-of-56 passing for the Red Raiders (4-8, 2-7), who nearly rallied from a 42-17 deficit but have dropped four of their last five.

"The last couple weeks I felt like the effort was there," Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said. "We're just not very disciplined. That's the biggest thing I take away from this whole year, and that's on me."

Three of those scores went to Bradley Marquez, who ended up totaling 130 yards on six receptions. Jakeem Grant topped the list with 155 yards and a TD on five catches, with DeAndre Washington and Devin Lauderdale posting a receiving touchdown each.

Chris Callahan converted a 36-yard try with 3:44 remaining that provided a 48-40 edge for Baylor.

Texas Tech took over on its own 27 after the kickoff, but shortly into the drive, personal foul and false start penalties gave the Raiders 1st-and-30 on their own 43. Following an incomplete pass, Mahomes hit Lauderdale for 17 yards.

Then, on 3rd-and-13 from the Baylor 40, Mahomes threw deep and Marquez came down with the ball in the end zone guarded closely by a Bears defender and the hosts were within 48-46 with 1:42 on the clock. Going for two, Mahomes was chased backwards, swarmed by multiple Baylor defenders and never got the ball away.

The onside kick was recovered by Linwood, who bulled his way up the middle for a first down on the following snap. Two kneel-downs later, and the clock expired.

Linwood's 8-yard run to the end zone was the lone score of the opening quarter. It was set up by the Bears forcing and recovering a fumble at the Baylor 41.

Mahomes found Grant open for a 27-yard strike early in the second, but Johnny Jefferson's 4-yard scamper put Baylor back on top on the next possession.

A fake punt for a first down aided the following Texas Tech drive, ending on a 40-yard make from Ryan Bustin, before Coleman's 28-yard TD reception pushed the Bears in front 21-10.

Mahomes connected on a 5-yard score with Marquez and Tech pulled within four again, and Baylor responded right away on another Linwood score, this time from three yards away.

Petty found Goodley for a 9-yard score, and the visitors assumed a 35-17 edge with 5 1/2 minutes elapsed in the third quarter. Russell hit Norwood for a 27-yard touchdown and 25-point spread just under three minutes later.

Bustin and Callahan exchanged field goals, then Mahomes aired it out for Lauderdale on a 48-yard connection which pulled Tech within 45-27 at the end of the third.

A 40-yard catch-and-run by Marquez made it a 45-34 contest early in the fourth, and then Washington did most of the work to tiptoe up the right sideline to score from 49 yards away on a Mahomes pass. A 2-point conversion failed, leaving Tech behind 45-40 with 8:13 remaining.

Game Notes

Texas Tech racked up 712 yards of total offense in defeat, with Baylor totaling 547 ... Coleman has gone eight straight games with at least one TD catch ... Washington ended up with 107 yards on six receptions.
